Meet at the Picnic Table

My paintings are experiences of outdoor places from observation, memories or imagination. Since March, 2020, we spent more time outside during the global pandemic to seek safety and connection to neighbors to overcome isolation. This body of work reflects my relationship with a place and its people,my neighborhood and neighbors. Being isolated and social distancing have drawn attention to the fundamental human need for connection – to each other and to nature. Outdoor rooms in front yards, back yards or the street were our gathering places.

In 2020, being outdoors took on new meaning and context of avoiding the virus transmission through respiratory droplets. Most of us spend a disproportionate amount of time outside. The outdoors during the pandemic has become a refuge as the primary relief from quarantine, work from home or a safe way to visit loved ones and friends. The outdoor patio table has been christened in 2020 as a relatively safe place to dine with others. Our generous neighbors frequently hosted gatherings at their turquoise blue picnic table.
