Although they are not true antelope, pronghorn are sometimes called “pronghorn antelope”. As I drive through West Texas and New Mexico and see that white butt, I shout out: “Antelope!” According to nps.gov, “Pronghorn evolved in North America 20 million years ago. They can run sprints at 45–50 miles per hour, an adaptation to outrun an extinct cheetah.”
